How to Play
Master the art of social deduction and hidden role gameplay. Learn everything you need to dominate your next game night.
Overview
Betrayal is a social deduction hidden role party game for 4-20 players. Hidden among your group are Shadows trying to eliminate everyone else. Can you identify them before it's too late? Players are secretly assigned roles: Allies (good) or Shadows (evil). Allies must work together to identify and banish the Shadows through voting. Shadows know each other and secretly eliminate or recruit Allies at night.
Teams & Roles
Allies
- The majority of players
- Don't know who anyone else is
- Goal: Identify and banish all Shadows through voting
Shadows
- 1-4 players depending on group size (1 Shadow per ~7 players)
- Know who each other are from the start
- Goal: Eliminate all Allies through kills and banishments
Game Phases
The game cycles through these phases:
Role Reveal
Each player secretly views their role. Shadows see who their fellow Shadows are. Allies see nothing about other players.
Day Phase
Open discussion among all living players. Accuse, defend, form alliances, or stay quiet. The host triggers voting when ready.
Voting
All living players vote to banish one player or vote "No Banishment". Player with the most votes is eliminated and their role is revealed.
Minigames
Compete in challenges to earn advantages. Success can reveal clues, provide protection, or give your team an edge.
Night Phase
Allies sleep and wait. Shadows secretly convene and vote on ONE action: Kill (eliminate one Ally) or Recruit (convert one Ally to become a Shadow).
Night Results
The outcome of the night is revealed. If someone was killed, players learn who died. If someone was recruited, they privately learn they are now a Shadow.
Win Conditions
| Team | Win Condition |
|---|---|
| Allies | All Shadows are eliminated |
| Shadows | All Allies are eliminated |
Strategy Tips
For Allies
- Pay attention to who accuses whom and voting patterns
- Notice who seems to be coordinating without speaking
- Be careful: accusing too aggressively makes you a target
- Remember: dead players' roles are revealed, giving you information
For Shadows
- Blend in with the discussion naturally
- Consider sacrificing a fellow Shadow to gain trust
- Coordinate your night votes: killing is safer, recruiting grows your team
- Don't defend each other too obviously
Player Scaling
The number of Shadows scales automatically with your group size:
| Players | Shadows |
|---|---|
| 4-8 | 1 |
| 9-14 | 2 |
| 15-20 | 3 |
| 21+ | 4 |
